MENDOZA, Argentina — Australia settled for a 28-28 draw with Argentina in the second rugby test Saturday after a late penalty try, sealing a 1-0 series win but missing a chance to sweep the Pumas on the road, the Associated Press reported.
Argentina captain Pablo Matera scored two tries, putting the home side ahead in the 64th minute. Australia had led 14-0 before Argentina leveled by halftime. Late yellow cards to Lucio Cinti and Santiago Carreras left Argentina with 13 players; a penalty try leveled the score with about 10 minutes left, but the Wallabies could not force a winner.
Australia had won the first test 27-21 in Jujuy. Head coach Les Kiss, unbeaten in four matches in charge, said his side “let them off the hook a couple of times.” The result denied Australia a fifth straight test win and a first series sweep in Argentina.
