Oil Climbs Above $100 as Gulf Shipping Risks Mount: September 9, 2026

LONDON — Brent crude rose about 2 percent to trade above $100 a barrel for the first time since July, while West Texas Intermediate hovered near $94–$95, according to market reports.

Traders pointed to U.S. strikes on Iranian tankers, Houthi attacks on Saudi targets, and renewed risk to the Strait of Hormuz, which carries roughly 20 percent of global oil and LNG. The wider conflict has run since February U.S.-Israeli attacks on Iran.

Brent had traded near $70 before the war. Euronews reported prices up almost 20 percent since mid-last week, a surge also covered by The Guardian, the BBC, and CNN.

Higher energy costs are feeding concerns over inflation and interest-rate paths as governments and markets weigh how long Hormuz disruption will last.
