WELLINGTON — Two Australian F-35A fighters are in New Zealand for joint exercises with the New Zealand Army and Air Force. Reuters said the Australian stealth jets are simulating attacks and interceptions with a New Zealand Poseidon in exercises that include the Australian air force establishing an overseas Forward Arming and Refuelling Point for the first time outside of New Zealand.
Air Vice-Marshal Darryn Webb said the partners are moving beyond interoperability toward integration and interchangeability, including shared airworthiness systems. He pointed to plans for an Australian pilot to fly on a New Zealand P-8A Poseidon and for technicians to maintain each other’s aircraft.
Australia’s Defence Department said common P-8A systems strengthen maritime surveillance, anti-submarine warfare, search and rescue, and humanitarian assistance and disaster relief.
The visits underline closer ANZAC force integration as both countries expand Indo-Pacific air and maritime cooperation.
