Weekly Recap: AfD Shock, GOP Midterms and Oil Above $100: September 10, 2026

A short weekly recap of the political and cultural stories that moved the fastest between September 3 and 10.

Germany’s firewall under strain. The AfD’s near-44 percent win in Saxony-Anhalt produced the strongest state result for a far-right party since World War II. In the Bundestag, Chancellor Friedrich Merz called remigration a synonym for ethnic cleansing; Alice Weidel cast the conservatives as pulverised. Coalition arithmetic in Magdeburg remains unresolved, Reuters reported.

Republicans stage a midterm convention. The GOP opened its first midterm convention in Dallas as President Donald Trump tied the Iran war’s end to the November election calendar and threatened further strikes, including at Pickaxe Mountain near Natanz.

Energy politics meets household bills. Brent and WTI both traded above $100 after intensified tanker attacks and Houthi pressure on Red Sea routes, keeping inflation and gasoline politics at the center of U.S. and European debate, per Reuters.

Culture and tech as status markers. Apple’s $1,999 iPhone Duo launch and New York Fashion Week’s fur-free official calendar offered softer counterscripts to a week otherwise dominated by war risk and party realignment.

The through-line: migration, war duration and price shocks are setting the terms for elections still weeks away — in Germany’s states and America’s midterms alike.
