KINSHASA — More than 7,000 Ebola cases have been recorded in the Democratic Republic of Congo’s worst-ever outbreak of the disease, Congolese authorities said, AFP and Al Jazeera reported.
Figures released over the weekend put confirmed cases at 7,022 since mid-May, with 3,398 deaths and 1,671 recoveries. The outbreak involves the rare Bundibugyo strain, for which there is no approved vaccine or treatment, though several candidates are being tested.
The epidemic began in northeastern Ituri province and spread through conflict-hit eastern and northern regions with weak health infrastructure. A case was recently confirmed in South-Ubangi, bordering the Central African Republic and Republic of Congo.
Government spokesman Patrick Muyaya wrote on X that the peak came in the third week of August and that indicators show a decrease, with 10 of 61 affected health zones recording no new cases for at least 21 days.
