Jordan Arrests Three Suspects in Deadly Church Attack After Hours-Long Shootout: October 26, 2026

KARAK, Jordan — Jordanian security forces have arrested three men suspected of Friday’s attack on a funeral at St George’s Greek Orthodox Church in Karak governorate, which killed nine people, officials said on Monday.

The Public Security Directorate said the suspects were found before dawn in an abandoned house. They refused to surrender and opened fire, and security forces wounded all three before arresting them, BBC News reported. No security personnel were hurt.

Public Security Director Maj. Gen. Abdullah Al-Maaytah named them as brothers Hazza Zaidan Mohammed and Meshal Zaidan Mohammed and their brother-in-law Ahmad Sami Hussein. A government source told Al Jazeera the standoff lasted about three hours and one suspect was in critical condition.

King Abdullah II praised the security forces:

The Nashama have chased them to the very end. We vowed the terrorists would not escape punishment, and no proponent of dark ideologies that divide Jordanians will be tolerated. We pray that the martyrs’ souls rest in peace and wish the injured a speedy recovery.
May God protect…

No group has claimed the attack. Interior Minister Mazen al-Faraya said authorities were “examining every factor that leads youth toward extremism.” Karak is home to a sizeable part of Jordan’s Christian minority, about 300,000 of the country’s 11.5 million people.
