BELGRADE — Serbian police shot dead a young man outside the Israeli embassy in Belgrade early Wednesday after what authorities called a “terrorist attack.”
Interior Minister Ivica Dačić said the attacker rushed at a police officer with two knives while shouting “Allahu Akbar.” The officer suffered a minor knife wound to the face and shot the attacker.
Dačić said the suspect, a minor and Serbian citizen who has not been named, had been monitored by security services because he was “known to be a supporter of the Islamic State.” Security services said he had posted a picture of the Islamic State flag on Instagram, BBC News reported.
Dačić raised Serbia’s terrorism threat level to “red alert,” the highest level, bringing stricter security checks and more police at infrastructure sites and crowded areas. He said the injured officer was doing well and did not need hospital care.
Israel’s foreign ministry said no embassy personnel were hurt and the mission was closed at the time.
It is the second attack on the embassy in less than three years. In June 2024, a man shot a police officer guarding the building in the neck with a crossbow before being shot dead.
