CARACAS — Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado has appeared in Caracas and called for presidential elections to be held in 2027, saying the country’s transition to democracy is now “irreversible.”
Machado thanked the Trump administration for opening what she called a “floodgate to freedom” after US forces captured Nicolás Maduro in January, the BBC reported.
“I come to carry out a task and complete a mandate,” Machado said, adding that she would not take part in negotiations with the interim government.
Interim President Delcy Rodríguez has said elections will be held but has not set a date. Rodríguez has also ordered that no one be detained without a judicial order, a step the opposition has long demanded.
Machado’s return marks a turning point for an opposition movement whose leaders spent years in hiding or exile under Maduro’s rule.
