South Africans approved for special votes cast their ballots on Tuesday, the second and final day of special voting before the country’s 2026 local government elections on Wednesday, November 4.
The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) said 2,655,067 voters were approved for special votes, either at home or at voting stations. Gauteng had the most, at 480,721, followed by the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal.
The commission deployed 127,000 electoral officials for the two days. It said nearly 99% of voting stations opened on time on Monday, though some areas of the Western Cape saw delays in the delivery of special vote ballots, SAnews reported.
Special votes are not counted until Wednesday, when they are tallied with ballots cast on election day. Voters who missed their home visit can still vote at their voting station on November 4, the IEC said.
