Iranian officials on Wednesday welcomed the Democratic sweep in the US midterm elections as a rejection of the war with Iran, even as Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei warned that anyone expecting a change in Washington’s policy was “seriously mistaken.”
Parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Iran’s chief negotiator with the United States, wrote on X that Americans had said “NO TO WAR.”
Mohammad Mokhber, an adviser to the supreme leader, said Trump had been “slapped in the face by his own people.” Khamenei’s written message marked Iran’s annual day commemorating the 1979 seizure of the US embassy in Tehran.
Also on Wednesday, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said four oil tankers caught fire after hitting naval mines in the Strait of Hormuz, the BBC reported citing the semi-official Tasnim news agency. An adviser to the IRGC commander named the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain as possible targets if Gulf states let Washington launch attacks from their territory.
Trump has warned that the US and Israel could return to all-out war after the midterms if no deal to end the conflict is reached.
