VIACHA, Bolivia — An explosion of pyrotechnic material at a military barracks in Viacha, about 30 kilometers from La Paz, killed at least two people and injured dozens on Friday afternoon, Bolivian officials said, according to the BBC and ABC Australia.
Defence Minister Ernesto Justiniano said at least 81 people were injured and seven others remained missing after “pyrotechnic material” detonated around 14:30 local time at an artillery regiment site. Police said fireworks had been stored at the base; the cause remains under investigation. Viacha health director Rita Nebraska earlier told local media that between 10 and 15 people were believed dead before the official toll was revised downward.
Police reported dozens of nearby homes damaged, largely shattered windows. Nebraska warned of a lingering heat source and urged people to stay at least 150 meters away. President Rodrigo Paz pledged a “thorough, technical and transparent investigation.” Viacha declared three days of mourning.
