China’s Exports Jump 25% in August on Autos and High-Tech Demand: September 8, 2026

BEIJING — China’s exports rose 25% year-on-year in August, accelerating from 23.9% in July, as overseas demand for autos, semiconductors, and other high-tech goods propped up growth amid soft domestic demand, customs data showed Tuesday. Imports climbed 28.2%, up from 27.5% in July, leaving a trade surplus of about $119.1 billion, up from $112.5 billion.

The export figure matched a Reuters poll forecast. Analysts pointed to global appetite for Chinese electric vehicles, solar cells, lithium-ion batteries, and AI-related hardware. Domestic consumption, investment, and the property market remain weak, keeping trade a primary growth pillar.

The data landed ahead of an expected meeting between President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping later in September, though Beijing has not confirmed an exact date. Premier Li Qiang has called for efforts to stabilize trade while acknowledging insufficient domestic demand.
