KHARTOUM, Sudan — Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces launched a coordinated drone attack on five power stations, causing mass outages across the country’s east, a government official said on Monday.
Two stations were hit in Al-Jazira, two in Gedaref and one in White Nile, “resulting in power outages across large parts of these three states,” the official said, as quoted by The Guardian. All three states are held by the army, which has been at war with the RSF since April 2023.
“My son is diabetic, his insulin has to be stored in the fridge,” said Babiker Youssef, a resident of Al-Fao in Gedaref. A farmer in Al-Jazira said the local station had only just been repaired after an earlier RSF strike.
The war is now fought mainly with drones. A UN tally says drone strikes killed more than 300 people in the first three weeks of October. Aid workers estimate the war has killed more than 200,000 people, and the UN has warned that attacks on power stations threaten millions already facing the world’s largest hunger crisis.
Sudan’s currency has lost more than 25% of its value in recent weeks.
