KYIV — Russia launched its largest attack on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure since the spring, primarily targeting Kyiv and the surrounding region, Ukrainian Prime Minister Serhiy Koretskyi said, BBC News reported. At least five people were killed in overnight strikes across the country, including a child in the Kyiv region.
Ukraine’s biggest private energy firm, DTEK, said power to about 8,000 homes had been restored after “a difficult night” for the capital. Russia’s Defence Ministry said one target was the Trypilska thermal power plant, a major supplier of electricity to Kyiv; operator Centrenergo confirmed damage and said it was assessing the scale. Koretskyi said 11 regions were attacked overnight, with residential buildings, social infrastructure, civilian enterprises and railways also hit.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said critical infrastructure was struck in the Zhytomyr, Mykolaiv, Kirovohrad and Rivne regions. Ukraine’s energy ministry said some households in Kyiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Donetsk, Sumy and Kharkiv regions remained without power Wednesday. Grid operator Ukrenergo advised residents not to use powerful appliances between 10:00 and 16:00 local time. Al Jazeera, citing AFP and Reuters, reported at least four dead in Kyiv and the surrounding region, including a child.
