Canada’s Counter-Tariffs on U.S. Goods Take Effect Tuesday: September 6, 2026

OTTAWA — Canada’s dollar-for-dollar counter-tariffs on about C$27.6 billion of U.S. goods remain set to take effect at 12:01 a.m. Tuesday, September 8, covering steel, dairy, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper, and electronics at rates of 15, 25, or 50 percent matching U.S. measures, according to the Department of Finance Canada.

Prime Minister Mark Carney ordered the response after trade talks collapsed and Washington imposed a 50 percent tariff on a comparable value of Canadian goods. Goods in transit to Canada when the measures take effect are exempt. Ottawa later narrowed the list after industry feedback, including removing fish and seafood to limit domestic harm.

Trade talks have been frozen since late August. Carney has said Ottawa is ready to deal when Washington is serious, Reuters reported earlier this month.

U.N. Probe Says Foreign Fighters and Drones Fuel Sudan War Crimes Risk: September 6, 2026

GENEVA — A U.N.-backed fact-finding mission said foreign recruitment, weapons, and drone technology are sustaining Sudan’s civil war and enabling strikes that may amount to war crimes, Al Jazeera reported.

The Independent International Fact-Finding Mission for the Sudan said transnational networks helped recruit and deploy foreign personnel for the Rapid Support Forces, including up to about 2,000 former Colombian military contractors operating drones and advanced weapons in Darfur and Kordofan. It also found reasonable grounds that the Sudanese Armed Forces used foreign-supplied drones that harmed civilians and infrastructure.

Documented attacks included RSF strikes in Kalogi, South Kordofan, that killed 114 people, and army strikes in Ad-Da’ein, East Darfur, that killed at least 70 and destroyed a major hospital. The UAE rejected allegations of support for the RSF; Chad said it remained neutral. The war since April 2023 has displaced more than 12 million people, the U.N. says.

U.N. Endorses Equal Earth Map After African Push; U.S. Casts Lone No: September 6, 2026

UNITED NATIONS – The U.N. General Assembly on Friday endorsed wider use of the Equal Earth map projection to show Africa’s true relative size, adopting a Togo-sponsored resolution backed by the African Union by 164 votes to 1, with six abstentions, the Associated Press reported.

Only the United States voted no; Serbia, Estonia, Georgia, Lithuania, Moldova, and Ukraine abstained. The nonbinding text encourages governments and institutions to move away from the Mercator projection, which enlarges high-latitude lands and shrinks equatorial regions. On Equal Earth, Africa appears about 14 times larger than Greenland, versus roughly equal size on Mercator.

Togo’s Foreign Minister Robert Dussey said maps shape education and collective perception. Africa No Filter and other campaigners said they want accurate maps in schools, newsrooms, and digital platforms. The resolution does not ban Mercator or change borders.

Iran Claims Strike on U.S. Vessel in Hormuz; Pentagon Calls It a Lie: September 6, 2026

CAIRO — Iran said Sunday it struck an unmanned U.S. vessel trying to enter the Strait of Hormuz, a claim the U.S. military dismissed as a “total lie,” the Associated Press reported.

The purported attack came a day after U.S. Central Command said American forces permanently disabled two Iranian oil tankers and destroyed a third unladen tanker after ballistic missiles targeted a U.S. aircraft carrier and destroyer; no U.S. personnel were hurt, according to CENTCOM and the BBC.

Fighting between the United States and Iran resumed last week after a month of relative calm, with the strait and Iranian coastal communities again targeted. At least five people were killed earlier in the week in a U.S. bombardment of southern Iran, AP reported. Diplomats say Washington and European allies are seeking to refer Iran to the U.N. Security Council over nuclear nonproliferation obligations as negotiations remain collapsed.

Zelensky Meets Witkoff and Kushner in Kyiv After Moscow Talks: September 6, 2026

KYIV — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky began talks Sunday with U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner in Kyiv, greeting them at St. Sophia Cathedral after their first visit to the capital as negotiators, the BBC reported.

The envoys arrived by train after flying to Poland. Zelensky said Russia’s strikes had made it impossible for their plane to land even though Ukrainian airports had been prepared. On Saturday they held about three hours of closed-door talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow that the Kremlin called constructive and frank.

Putin and Zelensky agreed to halt strikes on each other’s capitals for three days while the mediators travel. Overnight, forces continued strikes elsewhere: Ukraine said it hit the Ryazan oil refinery and a Rostov airfield, while Kyiv’s air force said Russia launched 108 drones and missiles overnight, with 82 drones and six missiles intercepted.

Zelensky said Ukraine was ready to discuss bringing “the end of the war closer” but needed security guarantees and a dignified peace. A White House official told Reuters next steps from the Moscow talks would be announced in coming weeks.

Pacific Leaders Voice Concern Over China Missile; Nauru Dissents: September 5, 2026

KOROR, Palau — Pacific Islands Forum leaders registered collective “concern” about China’s July ballistic missile launch into regional waters but failed to reach a unanimous rebuke, with Nauru dissenting from the communiqué clause, the Associated Press reported from the 55th Forum summit.

Leaders called for at least 24 hours’ advance notification of future intercontinental ballistic missile tests. The final text did not name China and stopped short of stronger criticism. Kiribati’s leader was absent from the retreat day; New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon said that should not block a Forum position. Palau President Surangel Whipps Jr. had pressed for a unified message on sovereignty and transparency.

Nauru switched diplomatic recognition from Taiwan to Beijing in 2024. China’s foreign ministry said Beijing pursues peaceful development and a defensive national defense policy. New Zealand will host the Forum in 2027.

Russia’s Africa Corps Helped Crush Niger Mutiny, BBC Reports: September 5, 2026

NIAMEY — Russia’s Africa Corps helped Nigerien loyalist forces regain control of Air Base 101 at Diori Hamani International Airport after mutinous soldiers seized the strategic site last Saturday, the BBC reported, citing fighting overnight in the capital and public comments by Russia’s ambassador.

Ambassador Viktor Voropaev said Russian forces had helped “repress a mutiny.” Africa Corps, under Moscow’s defence ministry and estimated at roughly 200 to 300 personnel in Niger, also played a role in repelling a January attack at the same airport. Analysts told the BBC the episode shows Africa Corps protecting junta governments in Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso beyond its stated counter-jihadist mission.

Gen. Abdourahamane Tiani’s junta seized power in July 2023 citing insecurity; al-Qaeda- and Islamic State-linked militants continue attacks in Tillabéri and Dosso. A Nigerien army captain on state television accused France and Chad of backing last weekend’s unrest; France has rejected such claims. Russia’s foreign ministry described the mutineers as extremists “seemingly incited by European former colonial powers.”

Philippine VP Sara Duterte Posts Bail After Arrest Order: September 5, 2026

MANILA — Philippine Vice President Sara Duterte posted bail Saturday after a Quezon City trial court ordered her arrest on three counts of grave threats linked to comments about President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., the first lady, and a former House speaker, Reuters reported.

The court found probable cause on all three counts and set bail at 120,000 pesos (about $1,900) per count. The case stems from a November 2024 online press conference in which Duterte said she had spoken with an assassin and instructed him to kill Marcos, Liza Araneta Marcos, and then-Speaker Martin Romualdez if she herself were killed. She has denied threatening them.

Outside court, Duterte said she did not feel safe and accused authorities of harassment. “I have no trust in the police, I have no trust in the courts,” she told reporters. She also faces a Senate impeachment trial that could remove her from office and derail a 2028 presidential bid. Marcos’s office said Friday it would respect any court order.

Iranian Media Say U.S. Missiles Hit Tanker Near Kharg Island: September 5, 2026

DUBAI — An Iranian oil tanker was hit by four U.S. missiles near the anchorage of Kharg Island, Iran’s main crude export hub, the semi-official Tasnim news agency reported Saturday, citing a correspondent and local sources, according to Reuters via The Straits Times.

Tasnim said there were no casualties and that the crew was being evacuated. There was no immediate official Iranian government statement, and U.S. Central Command did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Iran exported about 90 percent of its crude via Kharg before the war; flows have been disrupted since a U.S. naval blockade of Iranian oil exports began in mid-April. On Aug. 31 Trump posted that Kharg was being “blown to smithereens,” accompanied by an AI-generated video; Tehran has vowed a strong response if the island itself is attacked.

Putin Orders 72-Hour Halt on Kyiv Strikes as U.S. Envoys Arrive: September 5, 2026

MOSCOW — Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered a 72-hour pause in strikes on Kyiv starting Saturday as U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner arrived in the Russian capital with what President Donald Trump called a proposal to end the war in Ukraine, Interfax quoted Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov as saying, according to France 24.

The envoys were met at the airport by Russian investment envoy Kirill Dmitriev, TASS reported. They are expected to hold talks in Moscow before traveling to Kyiv on Sunday for their first visit to Ukraine since Trump returned to office. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukraine would halt airstrikes during the trip and urged Moscow to reciprocate.

Overnight Russian attacks still killed five workers at an industrial site in Kamianske in Dnipropetrovsk region, local military administration head Oleksandr Hanzha said. Zelenskyy linked Russian strikes on Kyiv and Boryspil airports to preparations for a possible U.S. aircraft visit. Ukraine’s air force said Russia launched ballistic missiles and 167 attack drones overnight; defenses shot down or suppressed 128.
